'Death trap' vehicles warning issued to young drivers, car loan customers
27/06/2008
A warning issued to young drivers by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) to avoid "death trap motor vehicles" has been backed by RAC Inspections.
According to recent findings from the TSI, in conjunction with Hertfordshire police, five out of eight second-hand lower-priced vehicles are not safe to be driven.
These cars are often favoured by young motorists and as such RAC Inspections has urged parents and guardians to help them when they are buying a used car.
Research by RAC Inspections found that one in three second-hand cars inspected by the RAC have potentially illegal or dangerous faults.
What's more, 75 per cent would not pass an MOT.
Commenting on the findings, Nicola Johnson, manager for RAC Inspections, said that independent vehicle inspections are definitely worthwhile before purchasing an older car.
She explained: "It is vital that used car buyers know what to look for, both under the bonnet and externally. Sadly, and more often than not, dangerous faults can only easily be spotted by a trained eye."
