Car seats must be replaced, car loan customers and other drivers warned
30/06/2008

A leading road safety charity has reminded parents of the importance of using working child seats, as Child Safety Week draws to a close.

Brake worked together with Direct Line survey parents and found that a quarter of those who had children between the ages of three and 12 did not use child seats at all.

This is despite laws which require seats to be used by all children until they are either 135 centimetres tall or aged 12, and despite statistics that showed that last year 30 children aged 11 or under were killed in car accidents - that could have easily been prevented with the aid of a working child seat.

Kate Sheppard, education manager at Brake, said: "There is nothing as devastating as the violent sudden death or serious injury if a child.

"Yet research suggests that a large proportion of families still don't prioritise their child's safety in their vehicles."

In other shocking statistics the Child Accident Prevention Trust released figures this week that showed that six children a week die in the UK as a result of avoidable accidents.
