Rise of diesel could prompt forecourt change
31/03/2008

An increase in sales of diesel is leading some experts to suggest that petrol station forecourts could be about to change, it has emerged.

Auto Express reports that more drivers, including those who may have secured a new or used vehicle with car finance, are looking to oil burning vehicles for more economical motoring and this has led some to suggest petrol stations need to change.

One such expert, Ray Holloway of the Petrol Retailers Association, said that forecourts are no longer reflecting the needs of the public and that he was "confident" this would soon be addressed.

"The ratio of diesel to petrol pumps no longer reflects the sale of the fuels … but the huge investment required to install additional underground tanks is putting retailers off at present," he said.

The magazine adds that diesel pumps could soon occupy the spaces reserved for less popular fuels such as unleaded and cites Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders research that showed 25.5 billion litres of diesel was sold in the UK last year - compared to 24 billion litres of petrol.
