Car loan customers and other drivers causing fewer accidents
27/06/2008
The number of accidents caused on Britain's roads dropped significantly last year, new research has indicated.
According to data from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), the number of deaths caused by drivers in 2007 was 2,943.
This is the first time since records began 80 years ago that the number to accidents has fallen below 3,000.
Kevin Clinton, head of road safety at RoSPA, welcomed the figures but warned drivers, including car loan customers, that they should not become complacent about the danger they potentially pose to others on the road and pedestrians.
He commented: "The progress we have made since then is a tribute to road safety professionals working in local authorities and the police forces, and shows the value of having long-term, government-led road safety strategies. Technological advances in the motor industry have also played a very significant role."
When accident figures were first published in 1926 is was revealed that 4,886 people had been killed by drivers.
